Tobias Hume was a Scottish soldier, viol player and composer who performed his music in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This recording features pieces for solo bass viol from his first work, The First Part of Ayres (London, 1605), interpreted by the viol player Leif Henrikson. The compositions are characterised by rich chords and melodic lines, with titles such as “Life”, “Captain Humes Pavan”, “My Mistress hath a pretty thing” and “Touch me lightly”. This form of music for solo bass viol would come to flourish in England for most of the 17th century.
