The duo formed by Hania Rani (piano) and Dobrawa Czocher (cello) stands as living proof that purely instrumental music has its rightful place on the contemporary music scene and is able to draw an increasingly broad spectrum of listeners. The genre of these ladies‘ music can be described as the more and more prominent “modern classic“, represented by artists such as e.g. Nils Frahm, Olafur Arnalds or Max Richter. Friends since their teenage years at music school in Gdansk, the pair share a spirit of adventure and curiosity. Even as life took them on different paths – Hania as a pianist and composer with two solo albums and a collection of songs written for Cinema, Theatre and Art Performances to her name; Dobrawa as solo cellist with the Szczecin Philharmonic – their friendship endured. The duo was created in August 2012, but launched into the world officially in September 2015, when the artists decided to release their first album, an inspiration for which was the figure of Grzegorz Ciechowski. They undertook to create new arrangements of his 10 most famous songs and they wanted them to be out of ordinary – that is why they decided to limit the instrumental set to just two instruments: cello and piano. This notion, tied up with their unhackneyed musical language and innovative compositional ideas, has certainly become one of the reasons for such enthusiastic reception of their debut album. The album is also not short of original compositions, which perfectly bind the different arrangements together, combining them into a single whole. Previously released on CD and digital formats only, the album is now available on Deutsche Grammophon for fans and collectors on a special 180 grams vinyl pressing.
