Grigori Kozintsev directs this Soviet drama adapted from the novel by Miguel de Cervantes. Following years of reading books about gallant heroes the middle-aged Alonso (Nikolai Cherkasov) believes himself to be a knight by the name of Don Quixote de la Mancha. Along with his horse and his friend, Sancho Panza (Yuri Tolubeyev), who becomes his squire, Quixote goes off on an adventure around 16th-century Spain attempting to perform good deeds but not always succeeding.
