Early Hou Hsiao-Hsien: Three Films 1980-1983 (UK-import)
Triple bill of earlier works from director Hou Hsiao-Hsien. In 'Cute Girl' (1983) the daughter of a wealthy man becomes enamoured with an easy-going land surveyor when visiting her family in the French countryside, but trouble begins to brew as she is already betrothed to another man. In 'The Green, Green Grass of Home' (1982) a young substitute teacher named Da-Nian (Kenny Bee) has his work cut out for him when he realises there are a number of naughty children in his class who are always getting up to mischief, and a shy pupil might be in need of help. Meanwhile, Da-Nian has fallen in love with his colleague Su-Yun (Meifeng Chen), another teacher at the school. Finally, in 'The Boys from Fengkuei' (1983) three friends depart their hometown in a small fishing village ready to lead a life of adult adventures in the big city. Ready to take up work and leaving their humdrum lives behind, the boys soon realise that growing up isn't as easy as they had first thought.
