Fast Food Nation is the film adaptation of journalist Eric Schlosser's best-selling book of the same name, which was an investigation of the national and international impact of the fast food industry. Directed by Richard Linklater, whose previous films include Slacker, Dazed and Confused and, more recently, A Scanner Darkly, the film traces the birth of an ordinary hamburger. The fictionalised narrative touches on a number of interlocking human stories, including those of an immigrant couple who cross the US border to work in a meat packing plant, of a teenage worker who dreams of life beyond the counter and of a corporate marketing expert who is shocked to discover that his latest burger invention - 'The Big One' - is full of manure.
