Five Graves To Cairo (1943) / Veien Til Kairo - The Masters Of Cinema Series (UK-import)
World War II thriller co-written and directed by Billy Wilder. Corporal John Bramble (Franchot Tone) finds himself stranded in the North African desert as the lone survivor from a British tank crew following a heavy defeat to Erwin Rommel (Erich von Stroheim)'s Afrika Korps. The first place he comes across is a remote hotel in the process of being taken over by German soldiers and set up as headquarters for Rommel and his team. Bramble is able to assume the identity of a recently killed member of staff who also happened to be a German spy. Under his new identity Bramble learns that he is being sent to Cairo and tries to use this new information to relay Rommel's plans back to British intelligence.
