Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals) is an 18-year-old welder from Pittsburgh whose one ambition is to become a professional ballerina at the Conservatory of Dance. In the meantime, Alex is forced to work as a cabaret artist in the evenings, struggling against the odds to achieve her dream.
