Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, Michael Shannon and Steve Carell star in this American drama written by Ron Nyswaner. Based on a true story, the film follows the struggle of lesbian police detective Laurel Hester (Moore) to have her pension transferred to her domestic partner, mechanic Stacie Andree (Page), after she is diagnosed with lung cancer. As she faces up to her terminal illness, Laurel takes her fight to the Ocean County, New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders and is forced to repeatedly appeal their decision to achieve recognition of her domestic partnership, making national headlines in the process with the help of equality activist Steven Goldstein (Carell). Laurel continues the fight to get financial security for her lover from her deathbed with help from various members of the New Jersey community including her loyal colleague Dane Wells (Shannon).
