Following on from his adventures in 'Great British Railway Journeys', Michael Portillo widens the scope of his travel to take in Europe. Using as his textbook 'Bradshaw's Continental Railway Guide', the 1913 pamphlet produced by cartographer George Bradshaw, Portillo travels by rail to locations as diverse as Monte Carlo and the Alps, with an eye to local cultures and traditions and the role each journey and the trains themselves played in the development of European history. The episodes are: 'London to Monte Carlo', 'Hungary to Austria', 'Berlin to the Rhein', 'Switzerland' and 'Amsterdam to Northern France'.
