William Kennedy provides the screenplay for this Depression era yarn, adapted from his own Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Down and out Francis Phelan (Jack Nicholson), a former big league baseball player, is haunted by guilt for the death of his baby. Accompanied by faded musician Helen Archer (Meryl Streep), he turns to alcohol to escape both his inner demons and his grim surroundings.
