With this original jackets’ box set Deutsche Grammophon celebrates the 70th birthday of Itzhak Perlman (31 August 2015). Between 1968 and 2001 he recorded 25 albums for DG and Decca – many of them classics – partnered by some of the greatest artists of his time. With new liner notes, a reminiscence by Itzhak Perlman himself and recording sessions’ photos, this set makes a fitting tribute to a great artist. He made his début on the Yellow Label with the much acclaimed Berg / Stravinsky Concerto coupling (with Ozawa) and won new fans for the Elgar Violin Concerto (with Barenboim) in the 1980s. Concerto recordings of Saint-Saëns and Wieniawski, Lalo, a 'favourites' CD and The Four Seasons with Perlman playing “Winter” also form part of the discography. The set also includes the highly-prized disc of Bach Arias featuring Kathleen Battle, with Perlman playing obbligato violin; and there is also the disc of Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich Concertos, with Perlman conducting his young protégé Ilya Gringolts. In this box the recordings are presented in their original couplings with original jacket sleeves. A pleasant surprise was the “rediscovery” of two sets of Mozart Variations that didn’t find room in the current bestselling Collectors Edition Box of Mozart Violin Sonatas – now restored to the catalogue for the first time in many years! The 25-CD box set presents the 25 LP / CD albums in their original jackets. Restored to the catalogue are two delightful sets of Mozart Variations, not included in the current set of the Violin Sonatas in Collectors Edition (see CD 19). New liner notes by Tully Potter. Photos from various recording sessions in the booklet.
