When two Russian sailors come ashore in Liverpool for a night on the town they make quite an impression on local girls Elaine (Alexandra Pigg) and Teresa (Margi Clarke), despite speaking only a little English. Elaine and Peter (Firth) swiftly fall for each other but he and Sergei (Molina) must soon depart with their ship. Utterly besotted with Peter, Elaine decides she must send a letter to the Russian General Secretary, Leonid Brezhnev, pleading with him to allow a reunion between the lovers.
