Ben Affleck writes, directs and stars in this crime drama based on Dennis Lehane's novel following a Prohibition Era gangster. Set during the 1920s and '30s, the film chronicles the criminal career of Joe Coughlin (Affleck), the son of Boston Irish police captain Thomas (Brendan Gleeson). After returning from fighting in World War I, Joe begins dabbling in heists and cons and enters the employ of Mob boss Albert White (Robert Glenister), while also having an affair with his girlfriend Emma (Sienna Miller). After a job goes wrong and he ends up in prison, Joe goes to work for White's rival Maso Pescatore (Remo Girone) who sends him to Tampa to run his own bootlegging racket. Settled in Florida, Joe sets about expanding his criminal empire and hopes to open a casino when gambling is eventually legalised.
