Fantastical romantic comedy starring Gracie Fields as Nellie Gwyn, a pub landlady who meets Prince Charles of Ruritania (John Loder) at a fancy dress ball while dressed as a glamorous showgirl. The prince falls in love with her and decides to renounce his royal life. But when his father, the King of Ruritania, dies, he realises that he is duty-bound to rule his country and must return from whence he came, leaving Nellie behind.
