Roger Vadim directs this tale of twisted love starring Brigitte Bardot. Arriving in Dijon to tend to the affairs of her recently deceased aunt, Parisien Geneviève Le Theil (Bardot) enters the wrong hotel room and discovers would-be suicide, Renaud (Robert Hossein), who has just taken an overdose. After recovering, the penniless and alcoholic loner seduces Geneviève, eventually convincing her to take him back to Paris with her. But over the coming months as their relationship intensifies, Renaud continuously maltreats Geneviève, attempting to degrade her in any way possible, while she, out of love, acquiesces - but for how long?
