Jessica Edwards writes and directs this documentary about singer, actress and civil rights activist Mavis Staples and her family band The Staple Singers. Featuring live performances, interviews and archive footage, the film chronicles the singer's inspirational career beginning with her childhood in Chicago, where her father formed Mavis and her siblings into The Staple Singers in 1950. The documentary charts the gospel group's success during the 1960s and '70s and Mavis' subsequent solo career as well as her contribution to the civil rights movement alongside family friend Martin Luther King Jr.
