Spanish maestro Luis Bunuel directs this early 1950s surrealist social melodrama. When tyrannical landlord Don Andres (Andres Soler) hires tough but simple-minded slaughterhouse labourer Pedro 'El Bruto' (Pedro Armendariz) to evict a group of poor residents from some slums on his land, he is dismayed to discover that Pedro has become an object of desire not only for his strong-willed young wife, Paloma (Katy Jurado), but also for Meche (Rosa Arenas), the sweet-natured daughter of one of Andres' wronged tenants.
