Australia, 1900: Jimmie Blacksmith (Tommy Lewis) is a mixed-race Australian Aborigine whose childhood is torn between his aboriginal roots and his upbringing by a Methodist minister. He does not seem to belong to either culture and he soon discovers that his literacy is a handicap. Jimmie leaves his white home and returns to native life, getting various jobs where he is consistently exploited. Following an affair with Gilda, a white servant girl, Jimmie marries her when she becomes pregnant, but the baby turns out to be white and not his. When the white family Jimmie is working for refuse to give him his rightful pay or food, this final act of injustice pushes Jimmie over the edge and driven by hate he enters his employers' house wielding an axe.
