Mel Gibson stars in this drama directed by Mark Rydell. With a downturn in the economy severely affecting grain prices and the river adjacent to his land prone to flooding, Tennessee farmer Tom Garvey (Gibson) is forced to break a picket line and take up extra work in a steel mill in a desperate attempt to keep his farm from going under. When unscrupulous property developer Joe Wade (Scott Glenn) then looks to build a dam upriver and flood the Garvey's land for his own benefit, Tom is forced to go to extreme lengths to try and protect his family's livelihood.
