The Show Goes On (1937) (UK-import)
Semi-biographical rags-to-riches story of a 1930s singer, mirroring the life of its star, Gracie Fields. Sally Scowcroft (Fields) is a northern mill worker whose talent is discovered when she is spotted singing in a local pub by ailing composer Martin Fraser (Owen Nares). Needing a singer to perform his ballads, Martin convinces Sally to try her hand at performing them, and in no time her unique comic take on the songs propels her to the fame she has always craved.
