Kirill Serebrennikov co-writes and directs this Russian drama. The film follows troubled teenager Veniamin Yuzhin (Pyotr Skvortsov) as his devout Christian faith begins to cause problems in his high school. It begins when he convinces his conservative principal that creationism should be included in the school's biology lessons, to the chagrin of his own atheist teacher Elena Krasnova (Viktoriya Isakova). His loud and profuse espousal of his beliefs causes more issues with staff and his fellow pupils as he begins to question the morality of those around him. However, Elena decides to be one of the few to stand up to Veniamin and challenge his fanatical beliefs.
