Julie Taymor's big-screen version of Shakespeare's last play sees the sorcerer Prospero undergo a gender transformation into the sorceress Prospera, Duchess of Milan (Helen Mirren). Usurped and dispossessed by her scheming brother, Prospera is banished to a remote island with her young daughter Miranda. As Miranda (Felicity Jones) grows into a beautiful young woman, Prospera's greatest wish is to see her married back into society, and she uses her magic powers to orchestrate a union between Miranda and Ferdinand, Prince of Naples (Reeve Carney). The supporting cast includes Djimon Hounsou, Ben Whishaw, Jeremy Irons, Alfred Molina and Russell Brand.
