Fred Thomas is an ECM artist who studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He is one of London's most sought after multi-instrumentalists and composer/arranger/producers. A member of the FIRE Collective, he is known for his breadth of musical styles as well as for specialising in creative re-interpretations of J.S. Bach, with solo albums on Odradek and The Silent Howl. He says of this new recording: "Although Bach probably played all the instruments of his orchestra, his 'mother tongue' was the organ and most of the trio pieces presented here are transcribed from his 'Orgelbuchlein'. Considered the sacred text of the organ world, this 'Little Organ Book' of glittering miniatures is a compositional treatise, an instrumental method, a collection of liturgical works and a theological testament. Brimming with rhetoric and characterisation, these are amongst Bach's most consicely radical creations, many of them condedsed to barely a minute and a half. Many of my trio transcriptions deploy techniques that separate the voices and avoid the typical blending and blurring of the organ in a church." - Fred Thomas This, his ECM debut as a leader is a Bach album transcribed for piano trio, featuring Lucy Railton and Aisha Orazbayeva.
