One of Ingmar Bergman´s earlier works, directed when he was just 30 years old, To Joy is one of the first of his films to exhibit his willingness to explore the most common theme of his later films - the incompatibility of spouses. To Joy tells the tale of two young violinists (played by Maj-Britt Nilsson and Stig Olin) who both play in an orchestra conducted by Sönderby (played by legendary Swedish actor, director and auteur Victor Sjöström). As the story progresses the couple marry and have children in a relationship, that at least from the outside, appears to be approaching martial bliss. However as the story progresses we see the marriage begin to breakdown and the male partner begins a sorbid affair until, eventually, the marriage breaks down under it own weight. Moving and evocative, To Joy shows the young Bergman as the master that he is about to become.
