Mike Ribble (Lancaster) was once at the very top of his profession - one of the few men ever to have pulled off the perilous triple somersault. However, Mike has paid the price for his professional daring and is now crippled. He sees something of himself in Tino (Curtis), a talented young performer who begs Mike to teach him how to do the triple somersault. Mike agrees to take Tino under his wing, but the relationship of the two men begins to degenerate when they both find themselves falling for the beautiful Lola (Lollobrigida).
