American romantic drama in which a poverty-stricken couple have their world turned upside down when they find out they are expecting a baby. Stuck in a dead-end job and barely able to pay bills, Melissa (Naomi Watts) struggles to make ends meet but she and her disabled boyfriend Richie (Matt Dillon) turn to each other for comfort in their grim situation. When Melissa finds out she is pregnant, the couple accept the tumultuous journey ahead of them as they attempt to create a positive environment for their future family. Things take an unsettling turn, however, when the return of Melissa's ex-boyfriend Justin (Norman Reedus) spells trouble for the couple and Richie's drinking to excess puts doubts in her mind about their future.
