Barbara Stanwyck plays Jo Courtney, the indomitable madame of The Doll House, a 1930s New Orleans bordello where the main attraction of the brothel - both for the clients and for Jo - is the bored and beautiful Hallie (Capucine). When Hallie's ex-lover, Dove Linkhorn (Laurence Harvey), comes to town in search of her, Jo acts swiftly and brutally to ensure that Hallie is kept within her grasp.
