Johan is arrested and Elise seeks the truth of what happened to her father with the help of Othilie, a prostitute. At the police station, she is informed that Johan is under suspicion for theft and not murder, as she first feared. When Elise arrives home from the factory one evening, she is forced to stand idle as her mother is taken away. There has been an opening at the sanatorium. Horrified that the Salvation Army will not pay for the expensive stay, she goes to Emanuel Ringstad for help, but as he walks her home, they cross paths with six threatening men.
